This accessibility statement primarily relates to www.nottinghamcollege.ac.uk. It does not apply to other website applications under the nottinghamcollege.ac.uk domain e.g. subdomains or third party systems using the Nottingham College logo.

This website is run by Nottingham College. As one of the largest further education providers in the United Kingdom, we want as many people as possible to be able to use our website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • Zoom in up to 300% without problems
  • Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • Use most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

This website has been through a site wide accessibility audit with a specialist website accessibility agency, HeX Productions and has been accredited through the Shaw Trust. You can find our certification status on the Shaw Trust website.

ShawTrust Accessible

Parts of this website may not be fully accessible. These areas include:

  • Alternative text missing on some images not considered decorative
  • Some pages and document attachments are not written in plain English
  • Many documents are in PDF format and are not accessible
  • When using keyboard navigation after the footer, the tab focus becomes lost on a hidden element.

The Nottingham College website provides information and content that comes from different sources/departments within the organisation and therefore there may be further work required to get this content updated.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Nottingham College is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances’ listed below.

Non-accessible Content - non compliance with regulations

  1. Images on some pages do not always have suitable image descriptions. Users of assistive technologies may not have access to information conveyed in images.
This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content).
  2. Many documents are in less accessible formats, for example PDF. Non-HTML documents published on or after 23 September 2018 must have an accessible format. This includes:
    1. Some PDF documents may not have an appropriate title (WCAG 2.4.2 Page titled)
    2. Some PDF document may not have accessible alternative text for image content (WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text content)

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Non-HTML documents published before September 2018 do not need to be accessible — unless users need them to use a service.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

The following areas are being addressed or are currently in review relative to the WCAG 2.1 AA criteria.

WCAG 1.1.1 (Non-text Content)

Images that do not have suitable alternative text have been identified and will be updated in a on-going manner, as the Nottingham College website has thousands of images across all it’s total pages. We have created an alternative text validation flow within our Content Management System (CMS) to ensure alternative text is provided for any image used. This is now mandatory and website content cannot be published without this being in place. Older image assets used before this date will now also flag this problem when attempting to save content since implementing this additional validation. In situations where images do not relate or convey important meaning, these are marked as decorative to avoid confusing contexts for users.

WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text content (PDF) and WCAG 2.4.2 Page titled (PDF)

Nottingham College is aiming to reduce the use of PDF documents where possible and instead replace these with HTML documents to improve accessibility. Some PDF documents on our website may not meet these requirements currently. A separate audit is being undertaken to identify non-compliant PDF documents and provide accessible alternatives or update PDF documents to comply if not able to be made into HTML documents.

We aim to update existing PDFs by 31st August 2023 if not able to be converted to HTML.
