Course outline

Beauty therapists can work anywhere across the world, from large global brands to running a salon or being a mobile therapist. Earn while you learn and gain a qualification alongside more advanced practical skills.

You’ll be based in the workplace and come into College one day a week to work towards completing your qualification.

The units you study will depend on your chosen route (massage or general) and may include:

  • Body massage treatments
  • Indian head massage
  • Massage using pre-blended oils
  • Stone therapy treatments
  • Body electrical, facial electrical and epilation
  • Tanning
  • Monitor procedures to safely control work
  • Employment rights and responsibilities

You will also study English and maths.*

English and maths - skills for your future
Employers and universities really value skills in English and maths. So, building on your existing knowledge of these subjects will help you prepare for your future career or further study. *If you are aged 16-18 and have not yet achieved GCSE English Language and Maths at grade C or above/grade 4 or above don’t worry - we’ll support you with the right lessons to increase your confidence in these essential employability skills.

Enterprise skills
Our courses are designed to help you achieve your ambitions, whether you plan to go on to a higher level of study or start a career. Employability and study skills will be included to help you develop the broad skills required by industry. They will vary from course to course and are designed to meet local and national employer needs.

Qualification

Advanced Apprenticeship in Beauty Therapy, incorporating an NVQ Level 3 in Beauty Therapy (general or massage routes)

Duration

12 months

Level Level 3
Entry requirements
  • You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job but we can assist you in finding a placement.
  • You will also need GCSEs at grades A* to C/9 to 4 or equivalent in English Language and Maths. Some employers may require additional qualifications depending on the role.

Adults who are aged 19+ without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply. You will need to undertake an initial assessment to determine the right level of course for you.

All applicants will be required to undertake an assessment in English and maths prior to enrolling.

Teaching & assessment

There is continuous assessment of each unit. You will present evidence of competence via practical assessments and production of a personal portfolio of evidence.

  • Employment in a salon/spa or self employment
  • University-level courses in related areas
  • Part-time beauty therapy-related courses to enhance your skills
Additional information

You will need to buy a kit and uniform to wear whenever you are at College. Kit and uniform costs are to be confirmed and will be discussed at interview.
