Advanced Apprenticeship in Laboratory Technician (Level 3)

Course outline

You’ll be working as an apprentice laboratory/science technician, carrying out lab testing and providing technical support to scientists/technicians. You could also work at a school or college.

You will be employed in a science laboratory either in industry or within a school or college. Whilst in work you will develop the essential practical skills needed for the role. You will come into College one day per week on day release to study the essential knowledge and skills needed in this area of work.

As well as a range of mandatory units, you’ll also select optional units to complement your studies and that are suited to your role.
You will study Functional Skills Level 2 in ICT

You will also study English and maths.*

English and maths - skills for your future
Employers and universities really value skills in English and maths. So, building on your existing knowledge of these subjects will help you prepare for your future career or further study. *If you are aged 16-18 and have not yet achieved GCSE English Language and Maths at grade C or above/grade 4 or above don’t worry - we’ll support you with the right lessons to increase your confidence in these essential employability skills.

Enterprise skills
Our courses are designed to help you achieve your ambitions, whether you plan to go on to a higher level of study or start a career. Employability and study skills will be included to help you develop the broad skills required by industry. They will vary from course to course and are designed to meet local and national employer needs.

Entry requirements
  • You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job but we can assist you in finding a placement.
  • You will also need 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C/9 to 4 or equivalent including English Language, Maths and Science. Some employers may require additional qualifications depending on the role.

Adults who are aged 19+ with appropriate industry experience but without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply.

All applicants will be required to undertake an assessment in English and maths prior to enrolling.

Teaching & assessment

Continuous assessment in your workplace. Assessment includes BTEC assignments throughout the course. Your Functional Skills are assessed through a written examination.

  • HNC/HND in either Applied Chemistry or Applied Biology
  • Science Technician Higher Apprenticeship
  • Employment within the industry
