Course outline

This course is Perfect if you enjoy and have some experience in caring for animals, and you would like a career in caring for them.

You’ll learn all about land-based industries, animal accommodation, feeding, grooming, animal health, behaviour and handling, animal biology and breeding.

You can expect work experience and visits to animal centres such as Stonebridge City Farm, the RSPCA and Cats Protection. You’ll also progress your literacy and numeracy skills whilst gaining a qualification to recognise your achievement.

This course is based at the Basford Hall Campus.

Entry requirements

You’ll need 4 GCSEs at Grade 9-3 (A*-D), including English Language and maths – one of English Language or maths must be grade 9-4 (A*-C) (Functional Skills L1 can be used as equivalent to GCSE Grade 3 (D) and Functional Skills L2 can be used as equivalent to GCSE Grade 4 (C) or above.


Choose to follow with further study in animal management or a diploma in horse care which could lead to various careers including veterinary nursing, horse riding instructor, stable manager, park ranger, animal welfare officer or a career in a zoo or safari park.
