Course outline

This courses is perfect if you enjoy science and particularly Biology and have a genuine interest in further study and/or a career in a medical-related field. If you complete this one year foundation course, equivalent to 1.5 A Levels, you can top up with the Extended Diploma in Applied Sciences (Biomedical).

You’ll learn about the various scientific principles within the biomedical science field and carry out science-based experiments and medical investigations. You’ll study human physiology, social development, behavioural sciences, biochemistry, environmental health and the importance of health promotion. It provides the perfect stepping stone to the Extended Diploma for the full two year programme.

This course is based at the City Campus (Maid Marian Way).

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Applied Science (Biomedical)

Entry requirements

You’ll need 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (A*-C), including English Language and Maths – both of these must be grade 9-4 (A*-C) or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and maths. You can also gain a place by having a relevant Level 2 vocational qualification with English and maths GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C).

Progression

Choose to follow with the full Extended Diploma which will take you through to a second year. You can then move onto University to study a medical or science-related subject and pursue a range of career options such as medicine and nursing, radiography, microbiology, immunology, histopathology, forensics, or into further medical research, perhaps in a laboratory.
