Course outline

If you see yourself working in the fascinating world of 21st century science, this course can prepare you for further study or to get a job or apprenticeship in the health and science professions.

This is a practical, work-related course and you will study in a realistic laboratory work environment.

Depending upon the chosen pathway, you will study from the following units:

  • Chemistry and our earth
  • Energy and our universe
  • Practical scientific project
  • The living body
  • Science in medicine
  • Biology and our environment
  • Investigating a crime scene
  • Investigating human behaviour

You will also study English and maths.*

English and maths - skills for your future
Employers and universities really value skills in English and maths. So, building on your existing knowledge of these subjects will help you prepare for your future career or further study. *If you are aged 16-18 and have not yet achieved GCSE English Language and Maths at grade C or above/grade 4 or above don’t worry - we’ll support you with the right lessons to increase your confidence in these essential employability skills.

Enterprise skills
Our courses are designed to help you achieve your ambitions, whether you plan to go on to a higher level of study or start a career. Employability and study skills will be included to help you develop the broad skills required by industry. They will vary from course to course and are designed to meet local and national employer needs.

Entry requirements
  • 4 GCSE’s at Grade 9-3 (A*-D), including English Language and Maths, one of English Language or Maths must be at Grade 9 to 4/A* to C; or 
  • A relevant Level 1 vocational qualification plus English or Maths one of which must be Functional Skills Level 2 and one at Level 1

Functional Skills Level 2 will be accepted as an equivalent to GCSE English Language and/or Maths.

Teaching & assessment

Assessment is through assignments. The assignments include written assignments, practical investigations and presentations. Your progression will be monitored during academic tutorials.

  • BTEC Level 3 in Biomedical, Forensic or Applied Science
