Hair Professional — Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2)

Apprenticeship outline

There are two distinctly different job roles within this occupational profile: Hairdresser and Barber.

Hairdressers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create variety of looks, and colour and lighten hair for ladies and men.

Barbers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using barbering techniques, style and finish hair, cut facial hair into shape and provide shaving services for men.

Hairdressers and barbers must be able to work with all hair types ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair. They also need to be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with their role and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.

We have a dedicated, passionate and award-winning team of hair lecturers, all with years of experience in the industry.

We have a specially equipped commercial salon in Nottingham city centre on Wheeler Gate, where you’ll be able to put everything, you’ve learned into practice with real clients and take ownership of your own learning which will gain your confidence and build your professional portfolio.

You’ll get the opportunity to take part in national competitions. Students have previously had their work featured in national magazines.

We’re all set up to give you a great start to your career, offering you continual professional development in your chosen field.

We have fabulous links with industry, such as companies include: Wella, Osmo and many more.

Standard

Hair Professional - Level 2 Standard

Duration

24 months

Level Level 2
Entry requirements
  • You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job but we can assist you in finding a placement.
  • You will also need GCSEs at grades 9–3 (A*–D), including English Language and maths – one of English Language or maths must be grade 9–4 (A*–C). Functional Skills Level 1 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 3 (D) and Functional Skills Level 2 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) or above. Apprentices without Level 1 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end-point assessment.

Adults who are aged 19+ are also able to do this course, you will need to undertake an initial assessment to rule out any prior learning.

All applicants will be required to undertake an assessment in English and maths prior to enrolling.

Teaching & assessment

There is continuous assessment of each unit. You will need to present evidence of competence via practical assessments and production of a personal portfolio of evidence.

Additional information

You will need to buy a kit and uniform. Kit and uniform costs are to be confirmed and will be discussed at interview.

Achievement of the standard makes you eligible for State Registration with the Hair Council.
