Bench Joinery (Level 3)

Course outline

On this course you’ll gain advanced technical skills in bench joinery and develop specialist techniques.

You will gain the knowledge and skills needed to progress in an advanced level of bench joinery.

We’ll teach you all the essentials of health and safety that are vital for working in a bench joinery workshop as well as gaining skills such as how to set out, mark out and produce a curved headed door frame, window frame, bay window with curved window boards as well as operate woodworking machinery such as a morticer and spindle. You will also learn how to set up a working site by planning locations for resources and staff along with producing programmes of work.

You’ll also learn how to analyse data that will help set you up for a career in the construction industry.

You will get work experience within the industry as an integral part of your course.

You will also study English and maths.*

English and maths - skills for your future
Employers and universities really value skills in English and maths. So, building on your existing knowledge of these subjects will help you prepare for your future career or further study. *If you are aged 16-18 and have not yet achieved GCSE English Language and Maths at grade C or above/grade 4 or above don’t worry - we’ll support you with the right lessons to increase your confidence in these essential employability skills.

Enterprise skills
Our courses are designed to help you achieve your ambitions, whether you plan to go on to a higher level of study or start a career. Employability and study skills will be included to help you develop the broad skills required by industry. They will vary from course to course and are designed to meet local and national employer needs.

Entry requirements

One of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grades A* to C/9 to 4 including English Language and Maths*
  • A relevant Level 2 qualification including GCSE English Language and Maths* at grades A* to C/9 to 4

*If you do not have both GCSE English Language and Maths at A* to C/9 to 4, we may accept one of them at grade D/grade 3 in addition to your 4 GCSEs at A* to C/9 to 4.

Adults who are aged 19+ with relevant industry experience but without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply.

Teaching & assessment

Each unit is continually assessed. You will present evidence of competence via practical assessments and the production of a personal portfolio. You will also need to sit a GOLA exam at the end of the course or individual modular exams.

Progression
  • NVQ Level 3 in Bench Joinery, if you gain employment within the industry
