Course outline

This course is perfect if you are interested in woodwork and careers in carpentry and joinery and would like to build your basic skills in this trade.

You’ll learn about the tools and technology used in this trade, will develop your knowledge of wood used in construction and how to build basic wooden structures used in construction projects such as roofs, door frames, staircases and shelves.

You can expect to get hands on in plenty of workshop activities, using tools and technology and in and environment that takes health and safety extremely seriously. You’ll learn about health and safety in the workplace, about the construction industry more broadly and will be fully supported by expert tutors who all have experience in the trade.

This course is based at the Basford Hall Campus.

You’ll need to complete an initial assessment before you start on the course which will involve you taking a skills test and completing an interview with the tutor.


Choose to follow with a more advanced qualification in carpentry and joinery or another construction trade at Nottingham College, or perhaps onto an apprenticeship with a construction company.
