Course outline

Previously known as CTLLS, this course is designed for those that teach on a one-to-one basis or deliver pre-prepared lessons to groups and can lead to the Associate Teacher in Learning and Skills (ATLS) status. 

It is also suitable for those who work or wish to work as teachers in adult community education; teachers/trainers in the voluntary sector; and training  personnel commerce, industry, the public sector or HM forces.

You’ll develop skills to enable you to refine and improve your teaching and learning as well as use constructive reflection in order to enhance your continuing professional development. 

You’ll cover the following topics:

  • the role of the teacher
  • teaching and learning approaches
  • meeting learners’ individual needs
  • lesson planning and lesson evaluation
  • observed practice
  • classroom management, motivation, communication and feedback

The course is designed to enable you to adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching; reflect on your own previous/current levels of experience, practice, skills and areas for development; identify principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation; and develop an awareness of your professional role.

Entry requirements

You will need a relevant Level 3 qualification plus GCSEs in English Language and Maths at grade 9-4 (A*-C).  

You must hold a Level 3 qualification in the subject matter you are teaching.

You will need access to a subject specialist mentor at your place of work.

You will be invited to an interview and will need a satisfactory CRB/DBS check and references.

Teaching & assessment

You’ll be assessed  over the course. Each module is assessed by assignments which include: reports; projects; essays; and case studies. You’ll also produce a professional development portfolio which focuses on teaching practice and involves lesson observations.


If you continue to a full teaching role you could progress to the Diploma in Education and Training Level 5.
