Course outline

This is a lively, practical, hands-on course designed to enable you to develop the skills and knowledge you need to work at the cutting edge of the fast-moving digital design industry.

You’ll encounter new ideas and attitudes and build a professional portfolio of work to take with you into the commercial world. You’ll study one of five pathways:

Digital Design - emphasis is placed on creative origination, problem solving and consideration of commercial products and processes.

Animation and Motion Graphics - you’ll gain an understanding of artistic and design aspects of animation production from initial concept to finished product, using 2D and 3D computer applications.

Applications Development - an introduction to application development using the Adobe Air coding toolkit and programming including image and sound
manipulation, and animation and interactivity.

Game Art Design - you’ll cover concept generation, character design in 3D, game design and production, development of user interfaces, sound design, motion capture and 3D animation.

Web Design - you’ll gain practical experience of developing for the internet, in-project negotiation, development, and the final design and publishing of an online application.

Core modules include:

  • graphic design and illustration
  • animation and games design
  • web design and delivery
  • interactive multimedia applications
  • visual culture
  • sound and moving image
  • professional practice

Pathway modules include:

  • studio practice in your chosen area
  • final major project in your chosen area

If you choose to study this programme on a three-year part-time basis, we’ll arrange an appropriate study plan for you.

The course includes live briefs, overseas field trips, the chance to work in industry and the opportunity to meet guest speakers from the private sector.

Foundation Degree in Digital Design


2 years full-time

3 years part-time

Level Level 5
Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of 48 UCAS points from:

  • at least two A Levels at ‘A2’ with one a related subject
  • a BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma in a media, IT or art and design related area
  • International Baccalaureate

Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff.

We would expect students to be working at Level 2 or above in English Language and Maths.

Mature students with relevant experience and/or qualifications, including an Access to HE Diploma within a relevant area, are welcome to apply. 

You may be invited to attend an interview.

Teaching & assessment

Your work will be assessed on a continuous basis.


You can expect to pursue a career in specialist areas such as graphic design, animation and games design, web design and interactive multimedia applications. You could progress to the final stages of a related honours degree or to our BA (Hons) Digital Media Design Top-up Degree, awarded by Nottingham Trent University.

We have links with local, national and international companies who look for graduates to join their organisations. Our annual end of year show is the  ideal opportunity to showcase your work to talent scouts from the industry.
