This course offers an introduction to traditional film based Photography. Starting with how to use a 35 mm SLR camera, you will then process a black and white film. The course will cover darkroom techniques such as making contact sheets and enlarging prints by hand. During the course there will also be an introduction to other photographers’ work that can inspire your own creativity.

|Teaching & assessment||
Assessment of your coursework will be done via a work folder which you will need to hand in at the end of the course. The folder should contain all practical work produced during the course, together with technical notes and evaluation of photographs.
If there is enough interest we will set up a level 2 course with more advanced techniques.
Film and print developing chemicals will be provided. You will need to buy your own film and photographic paper. You will be advised of the additional materials needed in week one and we have a stock of them within the department.
You are advised to provided your own apron (to avoid chemical splashes). We can provide protective glasses and gloves.
