Construction and the Built Environment HNC/HND (Level 4/5) - Full or Part-time

Construction 1

Course outline

HNCs and HNDs are established qualifications that are well-respected by employers. Designed for people employed in the construction industry in the building, building services and civil engineering sectors and related professions as technicians, they are an ideal way to continue your training while working at the same time.

For the HNC in each pathway you’ll cover eight topics:

Construction and the Built Environment: 

  • design principles and application
  • group project
  • health, safety and welfare
  • science and materials
  • construction and maintenance of buildings
  • management principles and application
  • technology of complex buildings
  • project management 

Building Services Engineering: 

  • design principles and application
  • group project
  • health, safety and welfare
  • application of scientific principles
  • applied mathematics
  • energy utilisation
  • LPHW hot water heating for non-domestic buildings
  • air conditioning for industrial and commercial buildings

Civil Engineering: 

  • design principles and application
  • science and materials
  • applied mathematics
  • group project
  • site surveying procedures
  • engineering geology and soil mechanics
  • civil engineering technology
  • structural analysis and design.

For the HND in each pathway you’ll cover these additional topics:

Construction and the Built Environment:

  • installation and maintenance
  • contractual procedures and procurement
  • economics
  • site surveying procedures
  • project design
  • implementation and evaluation
  • plus two further specialist units

Building Services Engineering: 

  • management principles and application

  • thermofluids and acoustic criteria
  • piped distribution services for non-domestic buildings
  • research project

Civil Engineering:

  • management principles and application
  • health, safety and welfare

  • hydraulic principles and applications
  • workbased experience
  • advanced civil engineering
  • research project

Construction and the Built Environment Pearson HND/HNC (Level 4)

Duration

Entry requirements

You should be employed in the building services sector of the construction industry and have at least one of the following:

  • at least two A Levels at ‘A2’, with one in a related subject area
  • a BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma in a related subject area
  • International Baccalaureate
  • a construction-related craft qualification equivalent to NVQ Level 3

Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff.

We would expect students to be working at Level 2 or above in English Language and Maths.

Mature students with relevant experience and/or qualifications, including an Access to HE Diploma within a relevant area, are welcome to apply.

Teaching & assessment

Each unit is assessed via assignments, coursework and project work.

Progression

You could progress to the final year of a foundation degree in your chosen pathway.

Alternatively, you may wish to progress to the second year of a degree course in a construction-related discipline.
