General Engineering HND (Top Up) (Level 5) - Part-time


Course outline

If you have always had an interest in making things, combined with the creativity to solve technical problems, then this full-time course can help you towards becoming an engineer to meet requirements for an all-round programme of study. 

This programme is designed to give you the flexibility and technical capability to be one of the engineers of the future, by exploring the integrated nature of engineering in general. This includes design, manufacture, maintenance, mechanical and electronic and electrical engineering. You could apply this knowledge across a huge range of industries, from food to plastics or pharmaceuticals. You could also work in utilities or even the armed forces.

With this course you will gain skills and knowledge across a range of core and more specialist units. The course will suit you if you’ve completed relevant studies at an advanced level (A Level or equivalent) or have relevant industry experience and want to pursue a career in engineering.

The course contains significant project-based learning including laboratory investigations, design work, projects, case studies and tutorials.

Entry requirements

You should have successfully completed 5 GCSEs at grade 9 to 5/A* to B, including English Language and Maths. You should have also successfully completed a relevant HNC with at least 10 units at Level 4 and 5. If applying from another institution please note that the HNC qualification has to have the same specification as the one at Central.

Teaching & assessment

Assessment is through assignments.


The HNC/D qualification is widely recognised in its own right and provides students with the skills required for employment in a broad range of industries with either a managerial or technical bias. After successfully completing the HNC you could also top-up your qualification to an HND here.

Examples of career areas include: research and development, design, technical sales, and production.
