Course outline

An HND in travel and tourism management provides you with a huge range of exciting career opportunities and incorporates an international study trip.

Whether you’re currently working in the industry and want to gain an academic qualification, or have completed A levels or equivalent and want to boost your career prospects, this course is suitable for you.

The HND provides training and vocationally relevant skills for a range of careers in hospitality, travel and tourism. This exciting sector is one of the fastest growing in the UK with huge opportunities both at home or abroad.

We’ll support and challenge you throughout the course with a variety of expert lectures, student-led activities and study day trips. In your second year you get the opportunity to go on a residential study visit overseas. We have great links with industry, so we can provide real-world learning which gives you industry insight.

You’ll study a variety of modules covering the travel and tourism sector, sustainable tourism development and management, to name just a few. The course is vocational, so links with industry are utilised wherever possible, with the aim for students to experience 'real-world' learning.

Entry requirements

Applicants must also have completed one of the following Level 3 qualifications equivalent to 64 UCAS points:

  • A Level pass in a related area, grade D or above
  • A pass grade on an appropriate Access to HE diploma
  • DM in 90 Credit Diploma
  • MM in Level 3 Diploma
  • MPP in BTEC Extended Diploma

You will also need to have achieved four GCSEs including English Language at Grade C/4 or above.

You must be aged 18 or over at the start of the course.

Mature students are welcome to apply. If you are a mature applicant you will need to demonstrate the ability to study at this academic level and have a genuine interest in the subject area. We interview as part of the application process.

Teaching & assessment

A combination of continuous assessment which includes assignments, research projects, case studies, presentations and study trips.


The HND qualification is widely recognised in its own right and provides students with the skills required for employment in a wide range of roles in the global hospitality, travel and tourism industry. Alternatively you could top up to a BA (Hons) degree at a wide range of universities. The point of entry (i.e. second or third year) will depend on the chosen institution, modules studied and the grades achieved at HND.
