Independent Living Pathway (SEND) (Sensory Skills) — Full-time

Course outline

If you are on the milestone continuum 1 to 4 with significant high support needs, this programme covers the basics of communication and helps to prepare you for life, in our multi-sensory environment.

You will learn the basic skills of interaction and communication such as making choices, using language, signs and symbols. Classes are kept small and taught in a mixture of traditional classroom and multi-sensory environments by specifically trained and experienced tutors.
The programme consists of a variety of topics with a specific focus on the development of communication and sensory experiences. Topics may include:

  • Communication skills
  • Number development
  • Making ICT accessible
  • Personal awareness
  • Music
  • Cooking
  • Gardening
  • Environmental studies
  • Art and craft

This course will be held at the Arthur Mee Centre in Stapleford for the first term and will then move to the brand new SLDD centre at our Basford campus in January 2025.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. You will be required to attend a guidance interview to find the most appropriate programme to meet your individual needs. All applicants will be assessed to ensure we are able to provide an appropriate and effective support package for you to access the College and the Sensory Skills programme.

We would expect for you to have an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) issued by relevant local authority to support your needs.

Teaching & assessment

You will be supported to produce a record of achievement to demonstrate your skills, experience and development in each area of the programme. You will have your own personal tutor to help support and guide you to ensure all your needs are met effectively.

Students aged 16-18 don't have to pay tuition fees.
