Course outline

The course is ideal if you want  to progress your career in a management role, or if you are looking to begin a management career in the industry.

You’ll develop a broad range of skills and an understanding of the hospitality industry. There is a strong practical approach. 

You’ll study one of three pathways: culinary arts; events; or hotels, resorts and restaurants. 

Year 1 core modules include:

  • developing business skills
  • business finance
  • managing the service encounter
  • legal environment
  • personal and professional development (including placement)

Pathway modules include:

  • culinary operations
  • operational  management (including running an event)
  • hotels, resorts and restaurant operations

Year 2 core modules include:

  • entrepreneurship
  • managing research and information
  • human resource management
  • management techniques

Pathway modules include:

  • gastronomy
  • events production, design and management
  • hospitality management

If you choose to study this programme on a three-year part-time basis, you’ll study four modules per year.

All of the tutors have excellent, in-depth knowledge from working in the hospitality industry. 

A five-month industrial placement period gives you first-hand work experience. Our students visit a wide range of establishments throughout the world, or find their own placements closer to home.

There are opportunities to attend study tours abroad - most recently to Disneyland® Paris - as well as an annual calendar of local and national visits.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of 48 UCAS points from:

  • at least two A Levels at ‘A2’
  • a BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • International Baccalaureate

Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff.

Applications from students with a relevant NVQ Level 3 are welcome. Industry experience is an advantage.

We would expect students to be working at Level 2 or above in English Language and Maths.

Mature students with relevant experience and/or qualifications, including an Access to HE Diploma within a relevant area, are welcome to apply.

Teaching & assessment

Each module is internally assessed through individual or group assignments, which can be practical, making use of local industry contacts. Assignments are industry-focused to develop the relevant skills of managing tasks and solving problems. Examinations take place in the first and second year.


There is a wide range of career opportunities within the industry, or you could continue your studies with our BA (Hons) Service Sector Management Top-up Degree, validated by Nottingham Trent University, or another top-up degree.

We have links with local, national and international companies such as Pine Brook Country Club, Boston, USA; Fairmont Hotels, Canada; Landmark Hotel, London and BSG International Hospitality, Alea Casinos and Marco Pierre White’s restaurants.
