Course outline

Nottingham College High Pavement Sixth Form Academy has been helping students in Nottingham achieve excellent results for over 200 years. Founded as a school in 1788 on High Pavement, it has since developed into one of Nottingham’s most well-known sixth forms.

The Academy is now located in a modern, purpose-built college building on Chaucer Street, right next to Nottingham Trent University’s City campus.

It is part of Nottingham College and it’s here that A Level subjects are taught in a lively, friendly learning environment.

Right in the heart of Nottingham Trent University’s City campus, you’ll gain that vital insight into what university life is like, which is really important when it comes to making decisions about your next steps.

Course structure:

You will choose three or four A level subjects to study in year 1, alongside English language classes. Each A Level subject is made up of 4.5 hours, 1 hour a week of tutorial and 8 hours of English language support.

Science, Maths and Computing combinations 

  • Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Psychology, Maths and Further Maths

Business, Economics and Maths combinations

Humanities and Language combinations

  • History, French, Geography, Politics and Sociology

Creative combinations

  • Art & Design, Photography, Film Studies and Media Studies

This course is available for 1, 2 or 3 years. 

September to June  - 34 weeks – per year.

Entry requirements

Two Year Programme

For most countries you will need to have completed year 11 of high school, with a strong overall school report and very good grades in the subjects you intend to choose for A-Level. You should not choose subjects that you have never studied before.

Maths based subjects require a maths test.

You will also need English Language at IELTS 5.0 with no less than 4.5 in any elements.

If you choose subjects such as Art and Design or Photography then you will also be asked to submit a portfolio of your work.

The minimum age a student can be accepted is 16.

You will need an overall GPA of 75% with no less than 75% in maths and the subjects chosen for A Levels. 

One Year Programme

  • (27 hrs per week +tutorial)
  • Outstanding candidate
  • IELTS 6.0 (Writing and Reading 6.0 and Listening and Speaking 5.5)
  • Minimum age 17

Three Year Programme

  • (22.5 hrs per week)
  • IELTS 4.5 (no less than 4.5 in any elements)
  • Minimum age 16

Teaching & assessment


All a Levels are assessed through written examination and in some subjects coursework is also included.

These exams take place at the end of two years. 


Learners are awarded A*-E and grades are equal to UCAS points for entry into Universities.


To progress onto a university degree programme students are required to complete and achieve high grades these will be set by each Russell Group university and these usually are A*AA/ABB. 

As a guide, most universities will require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 for entry to their degrees.

Additional costs

In addition to course fees, students may have to pay for course books at around £20-£30 each. 

Standard IELTS tests (not SELT) are offered twice per year, at a cost of approximately £160 per test depending upon current IELTS rates.
