Introduction to Early Years Education & Care Certificate (Level 2) (Part-time)

Course outline

If you’d like a career working with children, but need to balance study around your other commitments, this part-time course could be a great choice for you. It will give you an introduction to the world of early years and childcare, including areas like communication and child development. 

You’ll be volunteering for a minimum of 12 hours per week in a childcare setting, so you’ll have ample opportunity to put everything you’re learning into practice. 

If you are interested in a career in: early years, children centres, support work, health care, out-of-school clubs or schools, keep reading!

Early years education and care is an interesting and enjoyable sector to be part of. During this course you will cover units designed to give you a good grounding in the principles of looking after children and supporting their development. Units include:

  • Introduction to communication
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion 
  • Introduction to personal development
  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguard the welfare of children and young people
  • Supporting children and young people's positive behaviour
  • Paediatric first aid

You’ll have the full support of your tutor who will be able to offer guidance on your assignments to help you get the most out of the course.

Entry requirements

You'll need:

  • 4 GCSEs at Grade 9-3 (A*-D), including English Language and Maths, one of English Language or Maths at Grade 9-4 (A*-C) NOTE: Functional Skills Level 1 can be used as equivalent to GCSE Grade 3 (D) and Functional Skills Level 2 as GCSE grade 4 (C); or 
  • Relevant Level 1 vocational qualification plus English or Maths with at least one Functional Skills Level 2 and one at Level 1
Teaching & assessment

Assessment is by assignment tasks, direct observation at placement and a portfolio of work.

Progression
  • Level 3 CACHE Diploma for the Children & Young People's Workforce
  • Advanced Apprenticeship in the Children & Young People's Workforce
