Course outline

The course will help you if you are looking for a senior management role in aviation or tourism management. You’ll develop a broad range of skills and an understanding and appreciation of the tourism industry. There is a strong practical approach to the course. 

You’ll study one of two pathways: aviation management and operations; or international tourism. 

Year 1 core modules include:

  • developing business skills
  • business finance
  • managing the service encounter
  • legal environment
  • personal and professional development (including placement)

Pathway modules include:

  • airport operations
  • international travel and tourism development

Year 2 core modules include:

entrepreneurship
  • managing research and information
  • human resource management
  • management techniques

Pathway modules include:

  • management of the aviation environment
  • responsible and cultural travel and tourism management

If you choose to study this programme on a three-year part-time basis, you’ll study four modules per year.

All of the tutors have excellent, in-depth knowledge from working in the tourism and aviation industry.
A five-month industrial placement period gives you first-hand experience of the industry. Our students visit a wide range of establishments throughout the world, or find their own placements closer to home.

There are opportunities to attend study tours abroad - most recently to Disneyland® Paris and the French Alps - as well as local and national visits designed to enhance your studies.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of 48 UCAS points from:

• at least two A Levels at ‘A2’
• a BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma
• International Baccalaureate

Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff.

Applications from students with a relevant NVQ Level 3 are welcome. Industry experience is an advantage.

We would expect students to be working at Level 2 or above in English Language and Maths.

Mature students with relevant experience and/or qualifications, including an Access to HE Diploma within a relevant area, are welcome to apply.

Teaching & assessment

Each module is internally assessed through individual or group assignments, which can be practical, making use of local industry contacts. We have close links with national and international airports and airlines. Assignments are industry-focused to develop the relevant skills of managing tasks and solving problems. Examinations take place in the second year. 

Progression

There is a wide range of career opportunities within the industry, or you could continue your studies with our BA (Hons) Service Sector Management Top-up Degree, validated by Nottingham Trent University, or another top-up degree.

We have links with local, national and international companies such as Monarch Airlines, Virgin Airlines, Camp America, The National Trust and The Broadmoor Resort USA, which provide placements and progression opportunities at the end of the course.
