Course outline

This course is a great choice if you want to learn how to work effectively in the world of engineering.

You will complete three well-recognised industry qualifications, which all aim to equip you with the skills needed for further study and a career in welding.

You will gain skills in:

  • MIG welding
  • TIG welding
  • MMA welding

You will also study English and maths.*

English and maths - skills for your future
Employers and universities really value skills in English and maths. So, building on your existing knowledge of these subjects will help you prepare for your future career or further study. *If you are aged 16-18 and have not yet achieved GCSE English Language and Maths at grade C or above/grade 4 or above don’t worry - we’ll support you with the right lessons to increase your confidence in these essential employability skills.

Enterprise skills
Our courses are designed to help you achieve your ambitions, whether you plan to go on to a higher level of study or start a career. Employability and study skills will be included to help you develop the broad skills required by industry. They will vary from course to course and are designed to meet local and national employer needs.

Entry requirements
  • GCSE English Language and Maths* at grades D to G/3 to 1

*If you do not have both GCSE English Language and Maths at grades D to G/3 to 1, Functional Skills may be accepted instead of GCSE English and/or Maths. Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE grade D/grade 3 and Level 2 to GCSE grade C/grade 4.

Adults who are aged 19+ without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply.

Teaching & assessment

There will be continuous assessment of each unit. You will show evidence of competence through five practical assessments for each unit and a 15 question oral exam for each unit.

As part of your programme you will need to complete two days of work experience each academic year in your subject area. You will have to find the placement and keep a log book for reference.
