Apprenticeships Create Good Foundations

Barratt ApprenticesTwo Central College students are helping build homes for Nottingham futures, thanks to gaining places on an Apprenticeship scheme with leading developer Barratt Homes. Shaun Cowell is now a bricklaying apprentice at Hollygate Park in Cotgrave, and Luke Black gained a place as joinery apprentice and is now based at another Barratt Homes development in Farnsfield.

Shaun completed his Level 2 Bricklaying Diploma at Central College’s Beeston Centre, and he was recommended to apply to Barratt Homes’ Apprenticeship scheme by a tutor.

Since they started work in August, both apprentices have been working onsite gaining skills for their future careers. They even met the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Greg Clark when he visited Hollygate Park in August.

Shaun said:

“I have had a lot of support along the way from Central College and my family. The staff have taught me so much. I am hopeful that I will progress within the Barratt Homes organisation as they have a brilliant reputation and are such a successful company.”

Luke was keen to begin a career in the Construction industry. So he joined the Central College Nottingham Pre-Apprenticeship course. He successfully completed a Basic Construction Skills Award, and gained his CSCS Card and improved trowel skills at Central College. He then went through the Barratt Homes recruitment and selection process. Luke said:

“I’m really happy that I got the Apprenticeship and I’m very happy about how it’s all worked out”.

Hollygate Park is a development of two, three and four bedroom homes on the site of the former Cotgrave Colliery. It is part of the Cotgrave regeneration project, which aims to transform the Nottinghamshire village.
