Beauty student lands dream job on cruise ship

Emma Bidmead

When 18-year-old Emma Bidmead visited a cruise liner in Southampton earlier this year, little did she know that less than three months later she’d be swapping the salon at Central College for a job travelling the world on a cruise ship.

On 1 September Emma will start an induction programme with on-board spa specialist Steiner in London. From there, she will be assigned to a cruise ship then fly out to the ship’s main port to start her job as a massage therapist. It’s likely that she will jet off to work in the Caribbean after her induction.

Hair and Beauty Students aboard a Cruise Ship

Back in June, Emma was part of a group of students visiting the Royal Caribbean ship The Anthem of the Seas as part of her Level 3 Beauty Therapy course. Whilst there, she got exclusive access to the boat to see the on-board spa facilities, which are run by Steiner, and talked to current staff about what life at sea is all about.

Emma said:

“I heard about Steiner from my tutor during my Level 2 course at Central, then this year Steiner’s Recruitment Manager came into College and did a presentation about working on the cruise line.

“Then of course the ship I visited was amazing! So I applied to the company and I am now about to start a new adventure and work on one of the Steiner cruise ships as a massage therapist! The College has helped me to achieve this by making me aware of the career opportunities with beauty. They gave me the support and the confidence to go through with it! My tutor Becky especially really encouraged me with my personal ambition to work on the cruise ships.

“To be honest, before I started college I was very shy, and the College has really helped me overcome this and improve my confidence dramatically. They did this by putting me in situations that I was unfamiliar with and teaching me how to deal with them.

“I haven’t been assigned a ship yet but Steiner work with well-known brands like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Disney and P&O cruises.”

Alison Asbury, Central’s Head of School for Hair & Beauty said:

“We aim to recreate real-life salon experiences for our students both at Salon Central Beeston and in the city, but that’s not the end of the story. We also work closely with employers to ensure we can offer exciting career opportunities. We’re so proud of Emma and her achievement and wish her all the best for her new career.”

It’s not too late to enrol on a Hair & Beauty course this September
