Basford United FC player/manager, Martin Carruthers has been appointed Central College Nottingham’s new Head of Football Development.
Martin spent 17 years as a professional footballer playing over 500 league games at all levels including spells at Aston Villa, Stoke and Hull City. He has been player/manager at Basford since 2013.
His role at Central will be to lead and develop the football development programme including coaching the college teams which compete in the Conference Youth Alliance and the AoC (Association of Colleges) Sport League. In May 2015 the College was crowned Football Conference Youth Alliance (Midland division) champions after an unbeaten season.
He will also be responsible for developing the College’s programme with Basford FC which allows talented young players aged 16-19 to complete a full-time sport course alongside daily training sessions at the Club with the possibility to progress through the Club’s teams.
Previous students from the College’s football programme include former Forest and now Leicester defender Wes Morgan, Simon Francis, currently at Bournemouth and Notts County’s Colby Bishop.
“The development of the Basford football programme has really impressed me and it has helped promote the quality of both the college programme and the football club. The partnership has already been successful, not only in terms of winning the league, but the development of players which has shown that we can produce quality players over the coming years.”
“These are very exciting times for Nottingham on the back of our City of Football status. Our programme offers a unique opportunity for young males looking to develop their football education whilst also undertaking some fantastic qualifications. Our aim is to develop the programme even further and become the number one non-league club in the Nottingham area.”
Last season Basford United won the Midland Premier League and were promoted to play in the Evo Stik Football League South Division next season. They also won the Nottinghamshire Senior cup for the first time in 26 years.
