College Students Focus on Photo-Industry

Published on: 21/01/2016 (11:15AM)

Focus StudentsPhotography students at Central College Nottingham are launching their own commercial photo-agency.

‘Focus Central’ will become only the second student-run agency in the country and will run out of the College’s purpose-built photography department at its Maid Marian Way centre. The facility boasts three state-of-the-art spacious studios as well as editing suites.

The agency will give up to twenty students on the foundation degree course real-life work experience of how a business operates. Students will take on assignments such as family portraits, weddings and events including PR and product launches.

Course Leader and sports photographer for Backpage Images Matt Bunn will oversee the business.

Matt said:

“The digital revolution has changed the nature of the photographic industry, in particular who takes photographs and also how many of them are now available. The immediacy of user-friendly digital cameras and mobile phones has allowed almost anyone to call themselves a photographer. In teaching the students how to act and behave in a commercial environment we are giving them the best opportunity to survive and thrive as a professional photographer and learn the value of an image.”

“They are learning that that there is so much more to image making than just taking photographs. It is about setting yourself targets, meeting with potential clients, reliability, working within strict time constraints, becoming consistent with your techniques, managing finance, working within a team and attaining professional standards.”

The money the students generate through any bookings is put back into the agency to fund student trips to see other creatives’ work and put on future exhibitions.

The students have already undertaken work for Rex Assignments and EMFEC.

Focus Central will officially launch on 4 February with an exhibition of student work at the Bohunk Gallery on Fisher Gate open until Thursday 11 February.
