Matthew with his award.

An engineering student from Nottingham College, Matthew Taylor, was crowned “Young Inventor of the Year” at the annual Made in the Midlands business awards on 19 October.

Matthew (17) from Underwood is studying a Level 3 BTEC Extended in Engineering at the College’s Highfields Centre.

His invention was an acoustic speaker for a smartphone because he saw the need to use a speaker to play music outside without access to an electrical supply.

Matthew said:

I was amazed when I won as I was up against serious competition from other colleges and training agencies. Although I am pleased with myself I am also grateful for the support that I have been given by my project leader – Abbad Ahmad and the amazing facilities that the college have let me use.

Nottingham College engineering tutor, John Wright said:

We are really pleased for Matthew as he put a lot of effort into his submission, he has proven to be a very worthwhile student and has helped us to win this prestigious competition for the third time in a row. From a College point of view it shows what our young people can achieve if they are given the right encouragement and opportunities to succeed.
