Lilian takes part in chemistry experiment

Lilian Greenwood MP for Nottingham South swapped legislation for the lab when she visited science students at Central College Nottingham on Friday 10 June.

Lilian was visiting Central as part of a unique pairing scheme run by the Royal Society - the UK’s national academy of science, with support from the Government Office for Science.

The scheme pairs scientists with parliamentarians and civil servants so that they can learn about each other’s worlds and explore how research findings can inform policy making.  The MP visited Central along with her pair from the scheme, Dr Rebecca Dewey, a physicist from the University of Nottingham who gave a presentation on her research of neuroimaging.

During the visit Lilian spent time with the students finding out what the College is doing to encourage pupils to engage with science and maths. Lilian observed the students carrying out challenging practical experiments in the labs, applying theory to practice.

Jane Cunningham, Curriculum Manager for Science from Central College Nottingham said: “We were delighted to host Lilian and introduce her to our enthusiastic young scientists who are undertaking courses at a range of levels and pathways within science.  Many are coming towards the end of their course having developed excellent practical lab skills as well as a good depth of knowledge in the different science disciplines.”
